A Sair Sacrifice

Hear the stories of the men from the small island of Lismore in the Inner Hebrides who served and fell in fronts across Europe in this Lecture at Lauriston Castle!

A Sair Sacrifice

About A Sair Sacrifice

The stunningly beautiful Scottish National War Memorial holds the names of hundreds of thousands of Scots who fell in action during the First World War, from the Shetlands to the Borders. Virtually no part of the country was untouched by war - and its effects were devastating in small communities.

Hear the stories of the men from the small island of Lismore in the Inner Hebrides who served and fell in fronts across Europe, from France and Flanders to Gallipoli and Salonika. Drawing on original service papers, regimental histories, newspaper reports from the day and a good dash of local legend, the stories of these men are both fascinating and poignantly representative of all who fought in the war to end all wars.

All events in our lecture series include an opportunity to meet the guest lecturer, coffee and cakes and a special tour of the Castle.

About the lecturer

Ailsa Clarke's interest in WW1 was sparked as a 16-year-old on her high school battlefield trip. She went on as an adult to become a tour guide on the Western Front before going into secondary school teaching. She is also a practioner of living history who specialises in portraying women on active service during the conflict.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for A Sair Sacrifice are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
