This 5-week evening class is suitable if you’ve recently learned to sew and would like to learn how to make clothes. A simple pencil skirt is a good first dressmaking project once you’ve learned how to use a sewing machine. This class aims to teach you the sewing skills required to be able to make a gorgeous and fashionable skirt of your own. A pencil skirt has a few challenges. It will teach you the following foundation dressmaking techniques:
how to measure yourself and find the right size of pattern
understanding pattern markings, laying out and cutting fabric
how to sew darts
how to neaten raw edges
how to sew a zip
using interfacing to stabilise the fabric
how to attach a waistband
how to take up a hem
I’ll tell you what pattern to buy and how to choose the correct size. The pattern will give you the fabric requirements.
Sewing machines are provided or you can bring your own if you prefer. Please bring the instruction manual, bobbins, all the accessories (presser feet), and check that you have your power cable/foot control.
You should already be able to use a sewing machine confidently, be able to sew straight, even seams, and understand how to neaten raw edges. Or perhaps you’ve had a long break from sewing and would like a refresher, then this class is suitable for you too.
Level: Improvers (basic sewing skills required). If you’ve not yet learned how to use a sewing machine, then consider one of my Beginners Sewing Courses.
Duration: Thursdays, 7pm-9pm for 5 weeks
