About Cinetopia: International Noir

October's Cinetopia film event explores the film noir genre from an international arthouse slant. This gangster-filled Hollywood genre in the 30s and 40s inspired many filmmakers over the years, even some of film history's most notable auteurs.
Our first film is Ubiytsy or "the Killers" by Andrei Tarkovsky which was his first film he made as a student at the State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow. Based on an adaptation of a short story by Ernest Hemingway, this film was made by students and acted by students but already shows Tarkovsky's adeptness as a young film-maker.
Our feature film is Bob le Flambeur and is directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, the king of French noir filmmaking. Arguably one of precursors to the French New Wave, Bob le Flambeur pays homage to early American gangster films while offering humour, sophistication, and location shooting in what he himself called "a love letter to Paris."
Following the feature film, Cinetopia radio show contributor, Will Mitten, will be talking with film academic and critic, Pasquale Iannone, who is a foremost expert on Melville in a Q&A about the film, Melville, and international noir.
