Contemporary Botanical Art

About Contemporary Botanical Art

An exhibition of contemporary botanical art by members of the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists (SSBA) with sculptures by Ellen McCann.

Botanical has a long and important history. It was originally used to record the nature of plants for medicinal purposes and can be traced back to Antiquity. It continues to be used for such purposes today as scientific botanical illustration. While always true to nature, contemporary botanical art differs from scientific illustration by placing the emphasis on the aesthetic value of the plant and generating in the artist, and the viewer, a reflection on the beauty of nature. Ellen McCann's ceramics sculptures are inspired by the growth patterns of plants and offer a very personal take on the subject.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Contemporary Botanical Art are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
