Mackie and The Evergreens: Study Day

About Mackie and The Evergreens: Study Day

Published in 1895-6 at the height of the Arts & Crafts and Celtic Revival movements, the seasonal Evergreens are a beautiful insight into Patrick Geddes’ unique thinking. Four magazines were published; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, with articles on nature, biology and poetics. The Evergreen was the mouthpiece for the Celtic Revival and the four issues contained poems, essays and art devoted to Nature, Life, The World, and In the North.

Artist Charles Hodge Mackie (1862-1920) was a co-founder, and the first president (in 1900), of the Society of Scottish Artists. In 1893 he worked with Patrick Geddes creating murals for an urban renewal project at Edinburgh's Ramsay Gardens. Geddes admired the work of Mackie (alongside W.G. Burn-Murdoch and John Duncan), and acted as patron to them, providing the premises for a small art school and opportunities for commissions.

Mackie met and was influenced by Paul Gauguin, who convinced Mackie to use Japanese oak blocks for printing, rather than cut linoleum. These techniques are apparent in The Evergreens; the illustrations and Celtic decorations are by Mackie (who also designed the covers), with additional work by James Cadenhead, John Duncan, Alice Gray, Helen Hay, Robert Burns, and others.

This special day exploring our recently acquired first edition volumes will look at their context, ideas and traditional handcraft production. Our journey will include expert interpretation of Mackie and his fellow artists' exquisite illustrations and Geddes’ pioneering ideas, alongside leather embossing demonstrations.

This full day programme includes a complimentary lunch.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Mackie and The Evergreens: Study Day are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
