About Hunting Superbugs: Future Diagnostics for Antimicrobial Resistance

Cafe Scientifique Hunting superbugs - Future diagnostics for the era of antimicrobial resistance

Cafe Scientifique and Dr Till Bachmann join Surgeons Hall Museums for this discussion on antimicrobial resistance.Cafe Scientifique is an open and informal forum for the public discussion of science and engineering! The cafe is committed to encouraging public engagement with science by hosting monthly Cafes in which expert speakers are discussing timely topics with an audience from all walks of life, all sharing a common interest in science.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microbes become immune to the medications that previously used to kill them. AMR is a growing problem and the World Health Organization has warned that we could be moving into a post-antibiotic era where even minor injuries could lead to life-threatening infections. After hundreds of years of steady medical breakthroughs, there is a very real possibility of medical setbacks.

Developing new medicines isn’t enough. The discovery of new antimicrobials is too slow to keep up with the quick evolution of resistance.Instead, we need to preserve the effectiveness of the available antimicrobials we currently have. Rapid diagnostic tests may be part of the solution as their use may curb inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics by providing a test result faster and thereby better guide treatment decisions.

Dr Till Bachmann will talk about AMR and discuss some of the approaches under development that may ultimately provide a solution to this problem.

Dr Till Bachmann is Deputy Head of the Division of Infection and Pathway Medicine, Reader in Personalised Medicine in Infectious Diseases, and Programme Director of the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases MSc at The University of Edinburgh. Till has a PhD in biosensors from research at University of Stuttgart and The University of Tokyo and a German Habilitation in Analytical Biotechnology. He is an expert in point-of-care detection of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, conducting research at the interface of biomarkers and novel detection modalities. Till fulfils a variety of industrial and institutional advisory roles worldwide.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Hunting Superbugs: Future Diagnostics for Antimicrobial Resistance are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
