David Mach: Paper Trail
The Scottish Arts Club is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of the work of David Mach, one of Scotland's most widely acclaimed artists, during the Festival this year.
About David Mach: Paper Trail
Sorry, but this event has been and gone!
David, one of Scotland's most widely acclaimed artists with an international reputation, will be showing his collages in the club which has been a centre of artistic excellence for almost 150 years – not quite ancient and modern but a sign of how a seemingly traditional organisation is open to new ideas and recognises artistic talent. We are where the arts meet.
“Paper. I don’t seem to be able to escape it. I make installations using
newspapers and magazines, 100’s of tonnes of the stuff.
I’ve buried myself in huge collages of an epic Cecil B. De Mille scale over
the last 30 plus years all made with paper, with hard copy images I’ve
collected and filed over the same length of time now forming an image bank in
my studio of 100’s of thousands of images...all paper.
I’m making mini epics now. 100’s of them, using comics. Commando books,
Beano’s, Dandy’s , Hotspurs and Hornets, Beezers, Toppers, Buntys , Mandy’s
too, all the comics I grew up with, finding them entertaining as a kid and
still finding them relevant now.
Paper and collage of course go hand in hand but I’m often asked how I
developed my computer skills in order to make these images. That’s funny. I
have to confess I have almost no computer skills. I’m still cutting up images
with scissors and scalpels and sticking them down with Pritt and still finding
plenty of inspiration, still finding plenty of ideas, still finding plenty of
imagery, issues and concerns for this 21st Century.”
