About Inspiring Histories: Write Your Own Historical Fiction

Fancy getting creative this autumn? Start the historical novel you always wanted to write with three workshops over three months in the inspiring environment of historic Surgeons' Hall. Join acclaimed novelist E.S. Thomson for three interactive sessions that will guide you towards fulfilling your literary ambitions. Workshop 1 explores character and location, workshop 2 considers plot and dialogue, workshop 3 looks at ways of managing and constructing long narrative. You will be joined by a member of the Surgeons' Hall Museums team for a behind the scenes look at some of our magnificent collections at the start of every session, there can be no shortage of inspiration here!

The workshop series is open to all aged 18+ and no previous writing experience is necessary! The course consists of three workshops over three months. The workshop dates are:

Thursday the 5th of September 2019, 18:30-21:00
Thursday the 3rd of October 2019, 18:30-21:00
and
Wednesday the 13th of November 2019, 18:30-21:00

The ticket includes all 3 workshops. Sessions cannot be booked individually.

The workshop will be led by novelist and historian E.S. Thomson. E.S. Thomson is the author of the Jem Flockhart books, crime fiction set in the world of mid-nineteenth century medicine. Her work has been short listed for the Saltire First Novel Award, the Scottish Arts Council First Novel Award, the MacIlvanney Prize for crime fiction, and long listed for the Crime Writers Association Endeavour Historical Dagger. Her most recent novel, SURGEONS’ HALL, is set in 1850s London, and the Edinburgh of Burke and Hare. Elaine has a prize-winning PhD in the history of medicine.
