Formed in 2001, Live Drama runs classes, youth theatre groups and summer schools for 7 – 25 year olds in and around Edinburgh.

After-school, evening and weekend classes are targeted at all those wishing to explore general theatre skills including, creative writing, scene work, improvisation, character development, movement, voice and direction. The sessions take place at Southside Community Centre throughout the academic year, usually in 10 week blocks which culminate in a presentation to family and friends.

For those who are more interested in performance Live Drama runs four Youth Theatres, two at Southside Community Centre in Newington, one at Cameron House Community Centre in Prestonfield, and one in association with The Big Project in Broomhouse. Members of the Youth Theatres work on one fully supported production each year which provides them with the opportunity to develop performance and technical skills including set and costume, props, lighting and sound, administration and publicity. Depending on the level of experience within each group, participants may work from an existing play script or develop their own productions from scratch.

In the summer holidays, Live Drama runs intensive performance projects which usually involve creating a play from scratch using characters which have been developed by the group. In addition to improvising dialogue and creating scenes for the play, participants also take part in arts skills workshops covering choreography, voice work, direction, creative writing and set/prop design and construction. These projects take place across Edinburgh and are usually 1 – 2 weeks in length.
