Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) and Edinburgh and Lothian’s Greenspace Trust (ELGT) is inviting the community to celebrate National Tree Week at its popular tree dressing event on Saturday (1st December).
This year, the annual event is taking place at Craigmillar Castle Park from 3pm – 6pm, in celebration of trees and the life that they provide. Attendees can get creative and join in the tree dressing fun throughout the day. Other activities include a selection of arts and crafts, music, marshmallow toasting, storytelling, a 'treesure’ hunt and fire performances for the whole family to enjoy.
Romena Huq, engagement officer at FCS, said: “Trees are not only an important part of the environment but also to different cultures and faiths. We want everyone to come along and join us to celebrate National Tree Week and enjoy a range of fun-filled activities themed around trees. We hope attendees engage in activities, meet new people, learn about different cultures and are encouraged to continue to take part in FCS’s organised events.”
Running from 24th November to 2nd December, National Tree Week is the UK's largest annual tree celebration and launches the start of the winter tree planting season. It is a great opportunity for communities and organisations to do something positive for their local treescape.
FCS’s tree dressing event is free and open to the public, with many opportunities to make decorations to hang on trees. Hot drinks will be available for those that attend.
Ben McCallum, woodland engagement officer at ELGT, said: “Craigmillar Castle Park is an amazing asset for the local community. The tree dressing event on Saturday is a great opportunity for families living in Craigmillar and the wider Edinburgh area to discover the natural heritage found at their doorstep. We encourage everyone to join in and enjoy what’s set to be a magical day of activities and performances in beautiful woodland surroundings.”
The meeting point for the event is at the adventure playground in Craigmillar Castle Park. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather and wrap up warm. Under 16s should be accompanied by an adult.
For more information on this event, please contact Ben McCallum, Craigmillar’s woodland engagement officer on 0131 445 4025 or email ben@elgt.org.uk.
