Bonnie & Wild to roll out its White Heather Ceilidh Club after momentous success of its ‘electric’ launch night
“The atmosphere was electric” – ceilidh band leader Charlie Kirkpatrick
“Last night was a momentous success” – General Manager Kate Russell
Bonnie & Wild, Scotland’s biggest food and drink venue, is rolling out a series of regular ceilidh nights after the “momentous” launch of its White Heather Ceilidh Club in Edinburgh’s St James Quarter last night.
More than 250 excited dancers whirled and twirled the evening away at the Scottish Food Hall, with many of the ceilidh-goers sharing their experience on Social Media.
Now, Bonnie & Wild has announced it will host a regular night of Scottish Highland dancing on the last Thursday of every month. Tickets for September’s ceilidh will be made available in the next few days.
Kate Russell, General Manager, said: “Last night was a momentous success. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Everyone was dancing, cheering and laughing. It was such a buzz. It was friendly and welcoming, and everything a good ceilidh should be. We’re already looking forward to the next one!”
With more than 100 dancers often dancing at any one time, bandleader Charlie Kirkpatrick said it was one of the busiest and best ceilidhs he’d played at in recent years.
Charlie Kirkpatrick added: “What a brilliant night. The atmosphere was electric, and all the dancers were fantastic and up for it from the get-go. Right from the very first tune, everyone was dancing, and it stayed like that for the rest of the night. It was great to see so much tartan, too. It all reminded me of the legendary Riverside nights in Glasgow we used to play. Perhaps the White Heather Ceilidh Club at Bonnie & Wild will become as big an institution as those nights. Let’s hope so!”
Inspired by the White Heather Club, the iconic BBC TV show of the 1960s, Bonnie & Wild says its ceilidhs will run every month and will see greater collaborations among many of the concessions within the Food Hall as well as other local businesses.
Although free, the 250 tickets for last night’s launch, held as part of the Edinburgh Fringe, were allocated well in advance. Tickets for the next event, which will also be free, are to be made available in the next few days.
Ms Russell said: “As the nights evolve, expect to see our White Heather Ceilidh Club grow and grow. More space, more dancers, more tie-ins, and more collaborations with our fabulous concessions. We’ll also be doing bespoke cocktails for each night, perhaps with a nod to one of the many iconic dances. We really want this to grow and become a regular date in the Edinburgh diary.”
Ms Russell added: “A massive thank you to Charlie Kirkpatrick and his band, and of course to the hundreds of guests and passers-by who took part and made the night such a success. And a big thank you too to all Bonnie & Wild and St James Quarter staff who helped to ensure everything ran smoothly.”
Bonnie & Wild, located on Level 4 of Edinburgh’s St James Quarter, has fast made an impact on the Scottish food scene since the Food Hall opened in July last year. Renowned chefs Gary Maclean, Tony Singh and Jimmy Lee each operate food concessions within the Scottish Marketplace, and are joined by award-winning burger restaurant El Perro Negro, Scottish Street Food award-winners Kochchi, and local favourites east PIZZAS, Joelato, Cairngorm Coffee and Stack & Still. With a firm focus on Scottish produce and producers, the Food Hall also houses a boutique bottleshop run by Scottish drinks wholesaler Inverarity Morton. It has three bars, flexible events spaces, and seating for more than 370 guests. It is open from 9am until midnight.
