Burns&Beyond returns this week with exhilarating live music performances at the Burns&Beyond Festival Club in the Assembly Rooms on George Street featuring Colin Hay, The Twilight Sad, Adam Holmes & Heidi Talbot and the Kinnaris Quintet with special guests Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart and, for the younger Burns fans, the Bairns Burns Supper. Burns&Beyond also presents a feast of FREE live music and performance in Red, Red Rose Street. Audiences can discover an eclectic mix of 18 acts and artists in bars and cafes in and around Edinburgh’s Rose Street, including singer-songwriters Siobhan Wilson, Michael McGovern and Amy Papiransky.
Burns&Beyond is produced by Unique Events and supported by City of Edinburgh Council and Essential Edinburgh and runs from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 29 January.
Burns&Beyond celebrates the life and legacy of Robert Burns through a programme of traditional and contemporary art and culture, from across Scotland . . . and beyond. The inaugural festival in 2019 welcomed over 30,000 visitors, with audiences of all ages discovering the best in live music, art, comedy and more in some of the capital’s best-known buildings and more secretive spaces.
Alan Thomson, Unique Events, said: “We are thrilled to announce the return of Burns&Beyond for its fifth year, presenting an exciting programme of incredible artists from across Scotland in the beautiful Assembly Rooms and along Red, Red Rose Street. With a stunning line-up of some of Scotland’s best contemporary musicians together with more traditional family events, Burns&Beyond has something for everyone.”
Red, Red Rose Street, supported by Essential Edinburgh, offers free live music entertainment over the afternoons and evenings of Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 January in bars and cafes in and around the west end of Rose Street including Auld Hundred, Element, The Huxley and the Scottish Café and Restaurant. Audiences can enjoy the stunning sounds of Edinburgh singer and R&B artist Nikhita, or Tam Dean Burns’ anarchic post-punk super group The Bum-Clocks in their quest to mash Robert Burns with Iggy Pop and Rock ’n’ Roll poets, or singer songwriter Cara McBride. Red, Red Rose Street is free and unticketed and the full line-up of artists, venues and set times can be found at www.burnsandbeyond.com/events/red-red-rose-street/
Roddy Smith, CEO of Essential Edinburgh said: “We are delighted to again be supporting Red, Red Rose Street and Burns&Beyond. It is great to be celebrating both our national bard and our most famous hospitality Street in one event. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the city centre to enjoy all the fantastic events and the great venues.”
As part of Burns&Beyond, Stolen Elephant Theatre present 'Tam O’ Shanter, Tales & Whisky’ for a supernatural Burns Night at the Traverse Theatre on Wednesday 25 January. In collaboration with the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Burns&Beyond presents a programme of events to celebrate the life of the Scottish Bard. At The Waverley Bar on Friday 27 January, Dougie MacKay explores the themes of romance & supernatural encounter in Burns' work at Guid Crack, and on Friday 27 & Saturday 28 January in the Netherbow Theatre, Mairi Campbell chronicles her adventures with Scotland's most famous song in Auld Lang Syne. A spellbinding show of storytelling, animation, movement & new music.
The Burns&Beyond Festival Club at the Assembly Rooms in George Street will host a series of musical afternoons and evenings kicking off with a sold-out Afternoon of Music and Conversation with Colin Hay on Saturday 28 January. Founding member of Australia’s Grammy-winning Men At Work, who sold more than 30 million records during the 1980s, Colin has developed a solo career over the last 35 years, writing, recording, and touring extensively throughout the world as a solo artist.
Famed for their notoriously loud live performances, Burns&Beyond presents a very special intimate evening on 28 January with The Twilight Sad – Stripped Back who will be joined by special guest Michael Timmons. One of the most important bands to come out of Scotland in recent times, hear vocalist James Graham and guitarist Andy MacFarlane perform songs from across their critically acclaimed body of work. Limited tickets available.
On Sunday 29 January Burns&Beyond presents Edinburgh native Adam Holmes, whose 4 albums have cast an impressive shadow across the UK folk scene and gained him Scottish Album of the Year Nominations in 2014, 2017 and 2018 and also a nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. Adam is joined by folk star Heidi Talbot, also nominated multiple awards including for Best Live Act by the Scottish Traditional Music Awards and Best Female Vocalist at the Irish Music Awards, for a very special afternoon of music.
Following on Sunday evening, Kinnaris Quintet & Friends present an evening of uplifting, highly emotive, euphoric traditional music, showcasing Scotland’s leading female musicians and very special guest vocalists Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart.
The Bairns Burns Supper on Sunday 29 January is already sold-out with Burns fun for all ages featuring the incredible Fruin Ceilidh Band and some superb ceilidh callers, who will have the little ones’ birlin’ for Burns with traditional ceilidh dancing for all the family in this entertaining, relaxed, child-friendly event.
Councillor Val Walker, Culture and Communities Convener, said: “The programme for the fifth Burns&Beyond promises to delight fans of Burns as well as those discovering him for the first time. Celebrating the considerable achievements of the bard, the line-up includes events and activities for all ages including live music and performances in our Assembly Rooms and along Rose Street in the heart of the city.
“As the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, Edinburgh is always the place to be to mark the life and legacy of Scotland’s Bard. This is an annual event not to be missed - I would encourage everyone to explore the programme and join in the fun.”
