Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust organised The Edinburgh Canal Festival on Sat 15th June for the third year running. The event brought forward some of the traditional elements of past festivals together with new partners, to create a free community celebration event, open to all.
There were 5 zones that stretched from the Lochrin Basin all the way to Harrison Park West - each zone with a mix of activities, food, art and music performances – there was even the return of our mermaid on a paddleboard and a stilt walker! Visitors were able to find out about over 40 local groups, charities and social enterprises, their missions, and goals, and how to get involved or support their work.
The Raft Race once again took place in a new format, curated by Driftwood Adventure. Nearly 50 people, in teams of up to 4 people competed for prizes donated by local businesses, all under the masterful music and banter from Edinburgh’s own Andy Chung. Prior to the Raft Race, spectators were wowed by exciting Canoe Polo matches and demonstrations.
Rachel Sedman, Development Manager of FCCT says, “I want to thank the many the non-profit organisations, charities and social enterprises that helped to make 2024 such a great festival. So many people came and explored the canal and we hope they have discovered a place and groups they can continue to enjoy and engage with. As your local Community Development Trust, our aim to is to make the local area a better place to live, work, do business and visit and we intend for this important event to contribute towards achieving this
aim. The event is also a great networking place for the organisations who take part, who often catch up with or meet other organisations, and may go on to work together or join up to create new opportunities for the community.”
