The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has partnered with anti-plastic water company ape2o to help patrons reduce plastic consumption by installing one of ape2o’s “Big Ape” high quality water refill machines at Edinburgh Zoo’s main entrance.
Around seven million empty plastic water bottles hit landfill every day in the UK. With up to 43% of all plastic bottles in the UK ending up being incinerated, in landfill or our oceans, and being responsible for over quarter of a million tonnes of CO2e emissions each year, single use plastic bottles damage the environment for generations to come. ape2o’s sophisticated water refill machines, known as “Big Apes”, offer chilled still or sparkling water for a fraction of the price of plastic bottled water, without the plastic pollution.
ape2o, a UK based certified B Corporation, that provides consumers a pure water guarantee by using a multi-phase advanced filtration system and ultra-violet light sanitisation that clean and sterilise the water, removing any impurities down to the molecular level and dispensing it hygienically as people can’t touch the water source. The end result is some of the purest H2O you can drink.
Customers pay just twenty-five pence for each half-litre of chilled, ultra-filtered water from the Big Ape, fill-up using either their own water bottles or one of ape2o’s stainless steel plastic-free bottles available at the zoo or online.
Additionally, 20% of all sales at the zoo will be donated to support the wildlife conservation charity’s projects in Scotland and around the world.
Ben Supple, RZSS deputy CEO, said, “As a wildlife conservation charity, we are committed to enabling Edinburgh Zoo visitors to make sustainable choices. By using refillable bottles, this cuts plastic waste at the source and helps protect our oceans and marine life. Working alongside companies like ape2o, that are also committed to a sustainable future, helps to encourage all of us to think and act more sustainably, creating a world where nature is protected, valued and loved.”
ape2o Founder, Anthony Newman added, “We’ve already saved more than 620,000 plastic bottles from ending up in oceans and landfill. Our partnership with RZSS will now help us to get our anti-plastic message out to millions of visitors in Scotland, allowing them to ditch the plastic bottle habit and be a force for good. ape2o offers the best quality water - in convenience, purity, and taste - but without the plastic and at a fraction of the cost. It’s time to go ape2o!”
