About Being Human: Film programme

8 - 14 years

Cuckoo by Candoco Dance Company
England
4 min
This new visually striking and playful dance film is inspired by a bespoke prosthetic leg created by Sophie de Oliveira Barata of The Alternative Limb Project, for dancer Welly O’Brien. This unique limb is carved from cherry wood and features a working cuckoo clock and pendulum. The short choreography is a reflection on our changing experience of time passing, set to a poetic musical score by Jules Maxwell.

Strings by Barrowland Ballet
Scotland
12 min
Strings explores the rich possibilities for connection, and creative expression through dance. Bringing together dance artists and young people with complex needs, the film celebrates children’s ability to take the lead and express themselves physically. The connections are sensitive and intimate giving children creative agency in the work.

8 Tender Solitudes by Fevered Sleep
England
12 min
This short dance film made during lockdown, evokes what we lost when we were no longer able to touch. It was created in collaboration with seven extraordinary dancers, each performing alone. Featuring a soaring score by composer Kate Whitley, it’s made from yearning and sensuality, anger and frustration, grief, memory and love. When we’ve lived like this for so long, can touch ever be the same?

The Silent Child by Slick Films
England
20 min
This powerful and poignant film centres around a profoundly deaf four-year-old girl named Libby, who is born into a middle class family and lives in a world of silence, until a caring social worker teaches her the gift of communication.

All films available to watch from Monday 9 May (9:00) – Friday 13 May (17:00)
