Matthew Shiel is a concert pianist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the recipient of a scholarship to study piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied under Fali Pavri. He graduated with first class honours and several academic and performance prizes including: J.S. Bach Competition Prize for Piano, Harpsichord and Organ, Mary and Raymond Thomson Organ Scholarship, and Agnes Millar Prize for Outstanding Harmony and Counterpoint. He has performed at venues including St Giles' Cathedral, Sage Gateshead, Glasgow City Halls and Reid Concert Hall and has performed several concertos with amateur orchestras across Scotland.
Tonight, he presents a challenging programme of his favourite piano pieces sprawling 500 years of keyboard music from a Dowland song arrangement from the Dutch renaissance to a controversial set of 20th Century jazz etudes which were censored by the Third Reich who categorised them as 'entartete musik' or degenerate music.'
