About Acknowledging our past to move forward into our future - RSA Scotland Angus Millar Lecture

The RSA Scotland Angus Millar Lecture, postponed from 2022, will be taking place at Edinburgh City Chambers on the 23rd March 2023 in partnership with the Lord Provost of Edinburgh and the United States Consulate General Edinburgh. With the city having been exploring its historical connections to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, including a landmark apology issued by the Lord Provost, and planning to build a new programme of work to foster greater inclusion in Edinburgh, the Lecture will share learning and experiences from the civil rights movement in the US.

Acknowledging our past to move forward into our future.

Truth, Racial healing and transformation are racial equity pillars designed for community healing and actionable change, a framework launched by the W.K. Kellogg foundation in 2016. In this keynote, Dr. Rassheedah Watts will recount her journey serving as a chief diversity officer near ground-zero of Minnesota, the area in the U.S. recognized as the “national racial reckoning” triggered by the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020. At the crossroads of crumbling with hopelessness or envisioning an opportunity for progress, Dr. Watts will discuss the collaborative strategies put in place that positioned North Hennepin Community College as a racial justice change maker in the community.

Rassheedah ‘Eda’ Watts is the associate vice president of equity and inclusion at North Hennepin Community College and a certified diversity trainer titled the “Inclusive Community Architect.” She has led racial healing circles in Minnesota since 2020 and has taught courses on social leadership justice across the country. Her passion for higher education stems from being a first-generation college student who worked full-time through school and fought against the statistical odds of growing up in an underserved community.

The Angus Millar Lecture, a key part of RSA Scotland’s annual event programme, is funded by the legacy of Angus Millar FRSA.

This event is open to Fellows and non Fellows.

If you are not able to make the event in person, don't worry! The event will also be available online, and you can select an online ticket when you register.
