Having already announced a three-match trip to the USA as part of their warm-up programme, the match in the Scottish capital will be United’s only match in the UK prior to the 2023/24 Premier League season. It will set the tone for what’s ahead for the new season, giving Scottish fans the chance to see their heroes on the pitch and the chance for the clubs to debut new signings, new tactics, and new kits.
Dejan Lovren, Alexandre Lacazette and Jérôme Boateng are a host of stars plying their trade with Lyon. They are set to do battle with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Scott McTominay.
Manchester United (affectionately known as the Red Devils) were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath before changing to their world-famous moniker in 1902. The club play their home games at Old Trafford, nicknamed the Theatre Of Dreams. Over their storied existence, they've won 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups, six League Cups and three European Cups. In 1999, the club became the first in history to complete the League/FA Cup/European Cup treble in 1999 when they famously scored two late goals to defeat Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.
Over the decades, Manchester United has been home to some of the world's greatest players including Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane, George Best, Denis Law, Bryan Robson, Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney. Its most famous managers include the all-conquering Sir Alex Ferguson, Matt Busby, Wilf McGuinness and current manager Erik ten Hag.
The current Manchester United Women's team was founded in 2018 after the previous side was disbanded in 2005. In 2019, they gained promotion to the top flight, finishing fourth. In 2023, they were the runners up in the Women's FA Cup.
Manchester United's senior men's side will play Olympique Lyonnais at BT Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh on 19 July as part of their preparation for the new football season.
