Taylor is a multi-disciplinary artist, and her work includes installations, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture. She uses colour, light, surface and materials – often combining materials such as metal, plastic and wood – to create abstract compositions.
Much of her work is concerned with pattern and repetition, as well as time, mapping and the navigation of space. Her larger, site-specific installations often respond to, physically interact with and manipulate different spaces, while her paintings and prints change the reading of the two-dimensional surface.
The paintings in Incremental represent a marked slowing down of Taylor’s process. Whereas she often uses industrial materials such as car spray paint, this recent work has been created through a slower and more methodical – though still intuitive – process.
All the pieces of work in the exhibition have their beginnings in references to particular places, especially those on the coast and that are seen as being remote. She is based in Edinburgh but spends a lot of time on the West Coast of Scotland, Argyll in particular.
Much of her recent research has been concerned with light and how it changes in different places and at different latitudes. She began that research while she on a residency in northern Iceland in 2017, and developed it further on a second residency with the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists in Reykjavik in 2022.
She is currently working on developing her screenprinting, and incorporating printmaking into her practice, funded by a Creative Scotland Visual Artist and Craft Maker Award.
