How to resolve conflict in a community? From Palestine to Scotland, solving this challenge takes skill and wisdom. What can we learn from how conflict mediation has developed in different parts of the world?
Speakers:
Zoughbi Alzoughbi, Founder and Director of Wi'am, the Palestinian Conflict Transformation Centre in Bethlehem (via zoom)
Jasmin Aden , One Community Scotland
Trishna Singh OBE, from Sikh Sanjog
Colin Waters from the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution
The event will be a chaired by John Cooper, Director of The Fellowship of Reconciliation.
For the 2023 Carnall Peace Award Peace & Justice are recognising Wi'am: The Palestinian Conflict Transformation Centre in Bethlehem. For 25 years, this project has been using Arab forms of mediation, called 'Sulha' to resolve conflict amongst Palestinians who daily face the stress of living in the occupied territories.
Our event will consider the different ways in which violence and conflict in communities is being resolved from Bethlehem to Scotland. Our own country, Scotland, was once branded the most violent country in the developed world, though it was recently reported that murder rates here are at there lowest for 50 years.
The Scottish Violence Reduction Unit in Glasgow was set up to reduce violence in Scotland's biggest city. Jasmin Aden (tbc) from One Community Scotland will talk about her work with young 'New Scots'.
Colin Waters from the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution will talk about how mediation is being used in Scotland to resolve community conflicts.
Trishna Singh OBE, will speak about the work of her agency Sikh Sanjog with the Bhat Sikh community in Leith
If you are coming in person, we would encourage you to arrive early from 5.30pm for tea, a chat and a view of the Quakers' peace education exhibition 'Peace at the Heart'. The online event will open at 6.25pm and speakers will begin promptly at 6.30pm.
