The National Library of Scotland, Music Broth and FABULA (For A Better Understanding of Latin America) celebrate the musical riches that refugees, migrants and asylum seekers from around the world have brought to Scotland.
Carlos Arredondo, a Chilean musician and activist who came to Scotland as a refugee in 1973, will introduce the event with a short talk about the coup of 1973, its legacy, and the musical relationship between Chile and Scotland.
Carlos will be joined by the National Library’s Music Curator, who will speak about the Library’s music collections, and by musicians from Music Broth and elsewhere. The main purpose of the event will be for everyone to play, sing, improvise and exchange stories together, and to form new musical relationships.
Bring your own acoustic instruments, your songs and your stories, and join us for a jam!
History
Fifty years ago, on 11 September 1973, General Pinochet’s military coup overthrew the democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende. Pinochet’s junta subjected thousands of people to torture, murder and exile, and suppressed the Nueva canción chilena (New Chilean song) movement, outlawing songs and even musical instruments.
Taking place on Chile’s national holiday of Fiestas Patrias, this event is inspired by the Chilean musicians and singers who came to Scotland as refugees and played vital roles in the Chilean solidarity campaign. It also celebrates the Scots who welcomed them, and all the musicians from around the world who have come to Scotland before and since, bringing their music with them to enrich Scotland’s soundscapes.
Biographies
An influential figure in the Chilean Solidarity Campaign, Carlos Arredondo has played with many prominent Scottish folk musicians, as well as the 7:84 theatre company, the Scottish Refugee Council, and the UNHCR.
Music Broth is Scotland’s LOUDEST library! Its ethos is to make music playing, learning and enjoyment accessible to all. The Music Broth instrument library holds over 3,000 musical instruments and items of musical equipment, many generously donated by individuals from across Scotland.
