Wednesday Lecture Series – Raeburn’s Walking in Raeburn’s Shadow - the history and practice of silhouettes with Tessa Asquith-Lamb.
The silhouette is an enigmatic and fascinating art form where the slightest slip of the scissors can change the character or gesture of a figure portrayed. At the height of its popularity in the 18th and early 19th century these treasured mementoes of loved ones were hugely popular. Tessa has produced new silhouettes for the exhibition Raeburn’s Edinburgh and this talk will introduce you to the history of the specialism, while also providing a unique insight into how she created this unique series of paper-cut images. Tessa will bring along examples of her papercuts and historical examples from her collection.
Tessa Asquith-Lamb, FSA Scot, graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University after completing her MA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1998, specialising in etching and painting. Since then, she has continued to work on her art especially her printmaking with many exhibitions in public and private galleries. She was commissioned by V&A Dundee to create a huge paper-cut pop-up book for their opening, in 2016, and three of her etchings were acquired by Edinburgh’s City Art Centre for the National Collection, in 2020. Tessa is an arts educator who has run workshops and gallery tours for a wide range of audiences.
