Playtime with Helena Kay: the music of Carla Bley

About Playtime with Helena Kay: the music of Carla Bley

Helena Kay is one of the leading saxophonists of the new generation of Scottish jazz musicians. Helena Kay is also that rare thing - a pure, joyous improviser in the mould of Sonny Rollins and very few others, and like Sonny, Helena always seems to find a new twist and route around the chord changes and has a very beautiful sound.

Helena is up for a Scottish Jazz Award for her great second album, album Golden Sands. Here, Helena will lead three of the Playtime core group - Martin Kershaw (saxophones), Graeme Stephen (guitar), and Tom Bancroft (drums) with exceptional young bassist Ewan Hastie - in a tribute to the singularly brilliant composer and pianist Carla Bley. Carla, who sadly died recently, was famous for her beautiful compositions for both small and large ensembles.
