This new collection of works exhibits a variety of body mono-prints exploring the importance of play for everyone, regardless of sex, culture, or social differences. Within these works she incorporates sign language to create a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, creating a platform for the viewer to confront and connect with their own understanding of semiotics that creates their own identity independently and within a society.
Venue: Outline Gallery Space, 5 Lochrin Place, Edinburgh, EH3 9QX
Included in the exhibition is a short documentary, created by local photographer Alix McIntosh, sharing Play Is Soul Food's printmaking processes and techniques.
Play Is Soul Food not only creates and organises her own artistic projects but also works and collaborates with international artists and designers in her printmaking studio Ugly Food House, based in Mexico City.
After studying at The London Institute of the Arts, she completed her Fine Arts degree with Honours at Aberdeen's Grey School of Art, Scotland, where she specialised in printmaking.
Before opening Ugly Food House in 2016, she worked at some of the top Fine Art printmaking studios in the world, including Pace Editions in New York and STPI in Singapore. These experiences inspired her to c31streate and direct her own printmaking studio.
Although Play Is Soul Food bases her production in Mexico, she works and lives worldwide. She continues to evolve the Play Is Soul Food projects and movement.
“Play is many things.
Play is practice.
Play teaches.
Play heals.
Play nurtures.
Play is a child’s work.
Play is serious business.
Play is hands-on learning about the world.
Play, for adults, is invaluable soul food.”
