About the Edinburgh Highland Reel and Strathspey Society
The Society was founded in 1881 - the first of any such group dedicated to traditional Scottish fiddle music. Our aim is to continue the tradition of playing fiddle music and we perform several concerts each year, including our annual concert in the Queens Hall. Our repertoire is very varied - from slow airs, waltzes, pipe and fiddle marches to faster reels and jigs. The strathspey, unique to Scotland, is a cornerstone to the music we perform.
Members range in age from mid teens to 80+.
Musical Director - Yla Steven BEM
Yla lives in Perthshire and began playing violin aged 7 in Edinburgh. She graduated from RSAMD in Glasgow and has taught music in Edinburgh schools for almost 40 years. Yla has won many fiddle competitions most notably the Daily Record Golden Fiddle competition in 1976. She performs regularly as soloist for the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra.
Yla was awarded the BEM for services to music in 2015.
