A heartwarming, entertaining and captivating musical story exploring South Africa's past, present and future, interwoven with signature music and dance styles rooted in tribal and modern rhythms and powerful harmonies.
Set against the sub-Saharan historical timeline, the show threads universal themes of joy, sorrow and resilience while exploring key events that shaped native experiences, international connections and modern realities. Reimagined by the new generation of South African and Scottish artists led by the show creator and director, Morgan Njobo, ‘I Am Rhythm’ pays homage to the indigenous African cultures and sheds light on links between the two nations.
Developed and performed by local and international artists, this exciting creative collaboration presents a unique dance, music and physical theatre show that shares fresh perspectives on early Africa, the colonial and industrial periods, and the post-Apartheid era challenging cultural clichés and decolonising narratives. Energetic routines, engaging stories and mesmerising tunes capture audiences’ hearts and minds and bring about a reflection on our shared journeys and the heartbeat of humanity.
From the African vast plains, to Johannesburg’s diamond-rich mines, and Atlantic salty seas, to high-spirited shebeens, freedom-hungry and talent-abundant streets of Soweto, ‘I Am Rhythm’ is a cultural experience that cannot be missed.
