Real Farmer is a Dutch band hailing from Groningen, known for their energetic blend of DIY punk, angular art-rock, and gritty authenticity. The band has established itself as a powerful voice within the Dutch alternative music scene, with a sound that blends raw punk energy with experimental, free-form structures.
Formed by frontman Jeroen Klootsema, who grew up on a farm, Real Farmer chose their name to reflect a sense of straightforward reality, though their music diverges from rural themes. They have a distinctly urban, modern sound that reflects the complexities of contemporary life, often tackling topics like gentrification, drug culture, and financial hardship. Their lyrics are laced with personal and social commentary, presented with a fierce punk attitude.
Real Farmer’s debut album, Compare What’s There (2024), showcases their unique blend of styles, combining fast-paced punk rhythms with moments of melodic, atmospheric reflection. Tracks like “Inner City,” with backing vocals from bassist Marrit Meinema, draw comparisons to the dynamic between Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. The band’s use of fuzzed-up guitars, punchy bass lines, and gritty vocals creates a distinctive sound that is both aggressive and introspective.
