Theatre Paradok is a student led theatre company which prides themselves as being ‘experimental without being exclusive’, providing a platform for work that seeks to push boundaries of what student theatre can be, whilst encouraging ambitious new voices and creating fun opportunities for students to get involved of all aspects of theatre.
This bold production of Steven Saters 2006 Tony Award winning musical focuses on the struggle between teenage impulse towards sensory exploration and a fundamentally repressive society, played out in a 19th Century industrial setting. Theatre Paradok is proud to collaborate with Glasgow house ‘House of Black’ on this electrifying project as well as ‘Sex? On Campus!’ , a University of Edinburgh student group focused on tackling rape culture through consent education.
The timelessness of the tension between self expression and social conformity has been central to our reimagining of this production. From using live camera feeds and projection to play on themes of surveillance, to creating costumes that draw on different eras of counterculture fashion, we have designed a production that draws out the anarchy and frustration that thrums in every line of the script. We wanted to deepen the impact of moments of insight and soul-baring through our experimentation with a more stylised expressionist aesthetic. Our show is intercut with anachronistic acoustic ballads and alt-rock refrains that allow young people to express their anger, longing , love and heart break in raw, contemporary voices. Since the beginning of this production, we have been committed to exploring its complex themes and events with intent, care and empathy. We wanted to create something that felt grounded, and we have prioritised creating space for us to present these themes with the gravity and respect they deserve.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
