As you stroll beneath the oaks in the rambling Country Park, you may find it difficult to believe you are only five miles from the centre of Scotland’s capital city.

There’s a reason that Dalkeith Country Park is one of the region’s most popular country parks – actually, there are dozens. Here you’ll find walking routes along woodland paths, space to cycle in peace, and plenty to keep energetic kids amused.

2014 marked a new generation for Dalkeith Country Park as work began on our development project. Over the next year visitors will see the stableyard transformed into a family hub full of activities, food & drink and fun. It will also see the introduction of a brand new adventure playground, which we are confident will thrill our young visitors!

RESTORATION YARD
July 25 saw the writing of an exciting new chapter in Dalkeith Country Park’s already very colourful history. Or perhaps we should say re-writing. Because it marked the opening of a brand new store, café and wellbeing space in the restored and reimagined stables and courtyard there. Called Restoration Yard, it’s part of a multi-million pound investment by Buccleuch, which also includes the reopening of its famous adventure park, now named Fort Douglas.

With Amanda Pratt, one-time creative director of Avoca, the top Irish retail and food label, leading the project, a gorgeous, compelling shopping experience has been created around the 18th century stableyard. From the glass-walled Restoration Café, with its vista to the Orangery and along the River Esk to the new “old” courtyard fountain, period features are carefully renewed in tandem with a playful, contemporary sensibility.

And while the parents can lose the run of themselves among the joys of Restoration Yard, the kids can lose themselves in Fort Douglas, with its turreted treehouses and lofty wooden walkways. Oh and did we mention it’s set in 1,000 acre park just 5 miles from Edinburgh? As the line suggests: shop wonderful, eat local, restore balance. Amen to that.
